Biographical Note

WAND, or Women’s Action for New Directions, was founded in 1982 by anti-nuclear advocate Dr. Helen Caldicott. The organization originally held the name Women’s Action for Nuclear Disarmament, but as the Cold War came to an end, WAND adopted its new name and expanded its focus from primarily nuclear disarmament, to include military spending, anti-war efforts, women’s rights, peace, and security. Its activities include lobbying (through its legislative arm WiLL, or Women Legislators’ Lobby), grassroots activism, and the establishment of political networks with like-minded organizations. Arkansas’ WAND Chapter was founded in 1997 by Jean Gordon and acts as the coordinator for WAND’s activities in the state, such as a presentation by Liberian Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee.
