Scope and Content Note

The collection contains materials gathered by David Zimmerman during his historical research, including two photographs documenting the African-American community in Harrison, Arkansas, around the turn of the 20th century. Also included is a photograph of Eureka Springs, and two letters from folklorist Vance Randolph to Thelma O'Dell Carter of Green Forest, Arkansas, in which he solicits her knowledge on the location of Bradshaw Mountain and on reports of “white-cappers” and race-related violence in the Ozarks, as well as other miscellaneous collected correspondence, primarily relating to the Shook family.

Biographical Note

David Zimmerman is a Eureka Springs-based historian, freelance writer, poet, and artist. With journalist Jacqueline Froelich, he co-wrote a 1999 Arkansas Historical Quarterly article, “Total Eclipse: The Destruction of the African American Community of Harrison, Arkansas, in 1905 and 1909,” which was awarded the Arkansas Historical Association’s Violet B. Gingles Award.

Acquisition Information

The David Zimmerman Research Materials were donated to the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on July 17, 2014, by David Zimmerman of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Additional materials (those in folder 3) were donated by Zimmerman in August 2015.
