Historical Note

KUAF National Public Radio began as a 10-watt student run station in 1973. Dennis O’Neal, a journalism instructor, served as the faculty advisor. Before the station opened, a survey was conducted among the student population which showed progressive rock to be the most requested type of music. The programming ran approximately eight hours a day beginning at 4 pm and running into the early morning hours with extended time on Friday and Saturday. The majority of the programming was progressive rock. The station also played jazz, classical, and soul along with brief newscasts. In 1980, Rick Stockdell became the faculty advisor of KUAF. In 1982, the station increased from 10 to 100 watts. This change increased the primary signal from approximately 3 to 10 miles and the secondary signal increased from approximately 10 to 25 miles. The station was attempting to provide both public programming and serve as a training ground for students. In 1985, these two functions split. A closed circuit station was started for students and KUAF became a National Public Radio Station, focusing on performing arts, classical music, jazz, news, and public affairs. By 1989, the station had increased to 60,000 watts with four full time staff members. Along with national public programming, the station also broadcasted local music performances and in 1990 began the local news program Ozarks at Large with producer Kyle Kellams. In the early 1990s, the station also increased community outreach through events such as writing workshops and contests for K-12 students and visiting local schools during Classical Music Month. The station continued to grow in both staff members and audience reached. In 2001, the station increased to 100,000 watts. In 2007, KUAF had increased to 12 staff members. In 2017, the station continues to grow under leadership of Rick Stockdell.
