Biographical Note

The Funkhouser family, including Henry Funkhouser and his son, Jacob Funkhouser, moved to Northwest Arkansas from Pennsylvania circa 1830. Henry Funkhouser was one of the first orchardists in the area and set many acres of apples. He also operated a store and a blacksmith shop.

In the mid-1850s, Dr. Jacob Funkhouser moved the Funkhouser store to Summers, Arkansas, where he was the first resident physician and he was responsible for the first church, named Forest Hill. The church building also served as the first school in Summers. Dr. Jacob Funkhouser owned one of the largest farms in Summers, about 600 acres, and was married to Elizabeth Cole.
