Scope and Content Note

This collection is comprised of two manuscripts. The first manuscript, Walking My Lonesome Valley, by Colbert S. Cartwright, was privately printed in 1993 in Fort Worth, Texas. The manuscript, described as Cartwright's autobiography, is extensively annotated by an unidentified person. The second manuscript, The Second Reconstruction in Little Rock written by civil rights activist Nathaniel R. Griswold, is unpublished.

Biographical Note

Colbert S. Cartwright was born on August 7, 1924 in Coffeyville, Kansas. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1946. He received a Bachelor of Divinity from Yale Divinity School in 1948 and a Master of Sacred Theology in 1950. Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth, Texas, conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity upon Cartwright in 1976. Cartwright served as a pastor to congregations in Arkansas, Texas, Ohio, and Virginia until his retirement in 1989. Colbert S. Cartwright died on April 13, 1996 in Fort Worth.

Nathaniel Robadeau Griswold was born on March 15, 1901 in Columbia County, Arkansas. He attended Henderson-Brown College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas before attending Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, where he received a Bachelor of Divinity and a Master of Arts. Griswold continued his graduate studies at the Teacher’s College at Columbia University. He then returned to Arkansas and taught religion at Hendrix College from 1929 to 1942. Griswold served as director of the Arkansas Council on Human Relations (ACHR) and guided the organization during the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. He retired from the ACHR in 1972. Nathaniel R. Griswold died on September 7, 1991, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The Colbert S. Cartwright and Nathaniel Griswold Manuscripts were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries, on April 24, 2016 by Yvonne Hill and David G. Wixom of St. Louis, Missouri.
