Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of Jess Shroll’s ledger of his Ponca, Arkansas store and sawmill, with entries dating from 1927-1939. Included in the ledger are entries on sales, purchases, and employee payments, including dealings with the Ozark Stave Company, the Ponca Ore Milling Co., and the Millard Garage. Also included is a notarized affidavit by his son, Robert Shroll, that the ledger’s contents are Jess Shroll’s original entries.

Biographical Note

Jess E. Shroll was born April 6, 1886 to George and Leafie Shroll in Ohio. He later moved to the Boxley Valley of Arkansas, where he worked as a trader and ran a sawmill. He passed away November 1, 1938 and is buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Newton County, Arkansas. Acquisition Information

The Jess E. Shroll Ledger was donated to the Special Collections Department by Suzanne Liles of Yellville, Arkansas, on March 3, 2016. Ms. Liles received the ledger from Jess Shroll’s great-granddaughter, Felicia Marquez.
