Scope and Content Note

The collection features a typescript of one of Captain Maschil Manring's Civil War diaries, which offers brief accounts of his day-to-day experiences, focusing on food, weather, and troop movements. The typescript was created by the donor, Creta Gist, from the original diary. Also included are photocopies of correspondence by and records regarding Maschil Manring and photocopies of records regarding his brother George's death at the Battle of Champion's Hill.

Biographical Note

Maschil Manring was born September 5, 1825, in Gallia County, Ohio, to Jordan Manring, Jr., and Sarah Knox Manring. He briefly attended Kentucky's Augusta College before leaving to work in southern Ohio's iron industry. He married Ann Love on April 11, 1851; the couple had nine children. On September 26, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army, where he served as a First Lieutenant and then as Captain of Company A in the Fifty-sixth Ohio Infantry. He saw action in several engagements in the Western Theater, including at Corinth and Vicksburg, and lost his brother George during the Vicksburg Campaign. In 1865, he and his family moved to Gentry County, Missouri, where Manring worked as a farmer until retiring in 1896. He passed away February 21, 1905, in McFall, Missouri.
