Biographical Note

The Ozark Society was founded in 1962 by Dr. Neil Compton of Bentonville and a group of associates for the immediate plans of saving the Buffalo River from having dams put up by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Ozark Society has accomplished many things, including saving the Buffalo River in 1972, making it a national river, helping create Arkansas' first two United States Forest Service areas, and promoting the creation of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. The main goal of this foundation is to preserve the wild and scenic rivers, wilderness, and unique natural areas. It has several chapters throughout Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Missouri. The Sugar Creek Chapter was one of the chapters that was led by D. Neil Compton until 1991, when Joseph Meyer became the president of that chapter. However, the Sugar Creek Chapter later became defunct.
