The collection consists of materials relating to Willoughby McGehee and his family, and particularly to McGehee's service in the United States Navy during World War II. A notable inclusion is McGehee's personal diary of his experiences on the USS Miantonomah in 1942.

Biographical Note

Willoughby Fountain McGehee was born July 18, 1906, to John Fountain McGehee and Essie Oliver McGehee of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He earned a bachelor in business administration from Emory University in 1929. McGehee served in the U.S. Navy during WWII onboard the USS Miantonomah, a minelayer that was commissioned in Boston in 1941, and launched from Yorktown, Virginia in 1942 for anti-submarine activities in the Atlantic and Caribbean that took the ship southward past the Florida Keys, Trinidad, and Tobago. Following the war, he served as an Internal Revenue Service agent. He married Lassie Jones Youmans on January 9, 1952, and they had one daughter, Anne. McGehee passed away January 14, 1970, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
