Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of a land grant awarded to Audley Skillern for the southeast quarter of Section 26, Township 17, Range 29 (160 acres) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Although the document ostensibly features the signature of President Millard Fillmore, by 1851 presidents designated a secretary to sign land grants on their behalf.

Biographical Note

Audley Anderson Skillern was born April 2, 1818, in Pikeville, Tennessee to John and Mary Skillern. He married Emaline Vernon on February 18, 1843, and the couple moved to Washington County, Arkansas in 1845. Their son, John Audley Skillern, later built Skillern House and farmed the nearby area. Audley Skillern passed away January 6, 1880, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The collection consists of a single item. It is stored in a box with other oversized manuscript materials.

Acquisition Information

The Audley Anderson Skillern Land Grant was donated to the Special Collections Department by Mary Williams of Fayetteville, Arkansas on June 1, 2017. Mary Williams' late husband, Richard, was a renter at the Skillern House in the 1950s, and he found the document while living there. He retained it with the permission of then-owner Riley Skillern, before the Williams decided to donate the document in 2017.
