Scope and Content Note

The collection consists primarily of materials regarding the genealogy of the Lawson family, as well as documenting Lois Lawson Morris' writings regarding her family history in Arkansas and Georgia. These genealogical research materials are primarily correspondence, newsletters, and photocopies of historical records. Other materials relate to her involvement with various historical societies in Arkansas and Georgia, her interest in painting, and her teaching career at the University of Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Lois Lawson Morris was born on November 27, 1914 to Oscar Moran and Dona Alice Lawson of Antoine, Arkansas. She married William D. Morris in 1932, and the couple had one child. Morris earned a Bachelor's degree from Henderson State Teachers College in 1948, a Master of Science from the University of Arkansas in 1951, and a Master of Arts from the University of Arkansas in 1966. She taught history at Delight High School from 1942-1947, and also taught at Russellville High School before joining the University of Arkansas faculty as an assistant professor of education in 1955. Honored as Arkansas College Teacher of the Year in 1972, Morris continued teaching at the University until retiring in 1982. In her retirement, she painted and pursued her interest in genealogy, and was an active in a number of historical societies and community organizations. Morris passed away October 16, 2011.

Acquisition Information

The Lois Lawson Morris Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by Morris' grandchildren, Rebecca and Frank Howell of Russellville, Arkansas on July 21, 2017.
