Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of typescripts of correspondence, primarily between editor and writer Edward J. O'Brien and writer John Gould Fletcher; two letters are from Fletcher to Mrs. O'Brien (Romer Wilson). Also included with one of the letters is the typescript of a Fletcher poem, "To a Survivor of the Flood" (Folder 10).

Topics include their writings, their friendship, marriage, theology, philosophy, travel, and the writings of others, including work each recommended to the other. Writers discussed include Romer Wilson, William Blake, Janko Lavrin, Waldo Frank, Élie Faure, Amy Lowell, Herman Hesse, John Cournos, and Sherwood Anderson.

The correspondence is preceded by a cover page identifying the set as "Letters from E.J.O. to J.G.F. Second Carbon," and many pages are annotated in pencil with page numbers and alternate letter dates.

Biographical Note

Edward J. O'Brien (1890-1941) was an editor, anthologist, poet, and lecturer, best known for his annual compilations of America's best short stories. He was a co-founder of The Poetry Journal and later served as editor of Poetry, and himself authored poems such as "Hard Sayings."

O'Brien was born December 10, 1890 in Boston, Massachusetts, and attended Harvard University. In 1923, he married writer Romer Wilson; two years after her death, he married Ruth Gorgel, in 1932. He passed away February 25, 1941.

Acquisition Information

The John Gould Fletcher- Edward J. O’Brien Correspondence was donated by O'Brien's daughter, Ingeborg O'Brien, of Wootton Bridge, Ryde, Isle of Wight, on September 25, 2017.
