Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of black and white photographic prints and 35mm negatives, color slides, original artwork, and other records created or acquired by Charlie Hughes while working for the Cuban-Haitian Task Force at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. Other materials include a copy of the camp's newsletter, La Vida Nueva, Hughes' press passes, and a handbook for potential sponsors of refugees. Photographs capture daily life and recreation (particularly baseball and boxing) around the camp, as well as Halloween festivities, the aftermath of a fire, and other events. Some photographs illustrate the tensions between refugees and Army personnel. The majority of photographs are by Hughes, but others were taken by other press and government agency photographers.

Biographical Note

Charles Lee (Charlie) Hughes worked in the public affairs office of the Cuban-Haitian Task Force at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, in the early 1980s, and served as chief spokesman from 1981-1982.

Hughes is currently a freelance writer, and has also worked in advertising and as a newspaper editor.

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged by format. Negatives have been foldered based on original groupings, and Hughes' original titles for groupings have been retained when present. Folders of negatives have then been arranged chronologically. Image numbers have been assigned by the archivist.

Acquisition Information

The Charles Lee Hughes Fort Chaffee Photograph Collection was donated to Special Collections by Charles Lee Hughes of Fayetteville, Arkansas, on September 29, 2017.

Existence and Location of Copies

Photographic slides and negatives in Box 1, Folders 6-23 were digitized by the University of Arkansas Digital Services Division in March 2023. Access and master tiff files are stored on Special Collections' preservation server and are available to view in the Special Collections Reading Room.
