The collection consists of a single handwritten letter from United States Congressman William Drayton, in his capacity as Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs, to an unnamed man, asking for information to aid Drayton in drafting a bill regarding protections for states (including Arkansas) and territories bordering the Indian Territory.

Biographical Note

William Drayton (1776-1846) was a U.S. Army officer during the War of 1812, and represented South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1825-1833. For much of his time in Congress, he served as Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs. He later served as president of the Bank of the United States, from 1840-1841.
