Biographical Note
Isaac Stallsworth Dial was born November 9, 1797, in Laurens County, South Carolina. He married Permelia Cunningham on January 23, 1823. In 1842, the couple still lived in Laurens County, South Carolina, later moving to Talladega County, Alabama. By 1856, they had joined their son Hugh Dial in Kaufman County, Texas. They also had at least two other children, Louezer Dial Hanks and Isaac James Dial. Dial died March 3, 1864.
Hugh Dial, one of Isaac's sons, was born in 1824. He married Mariah Spradley on August 16, 1853, and was part of the inaugural Board of Trustees of Kaufman University in Kaufman, Texas, as approved by the Texas State Legislature in 1860.
In the 1859 bill of sale, Abraham is identified as a 23-year-old enslaved male. In 1867, under the name of Abe Dial, he filed a complaint against Hugh Dial with the Freedman's Bureau, and Hugh Dial was ordered to reimburse Abe Dial for work done in 1866.
