Biographical Note

Charlotte Ellen Lea was born June 24, 1860, to Rev. William Knibb Lea and Charlotte Tingle Lea in China, where her father was serving as a missionary. The family later moved back to England. Lea married barrister and antiquarian Alfred Ridley Bax on November 7, 1882. The couple had four children, including composer Arnold Edward Trevor Bax and playwright and author Clifford Lea Bax. The family lived in the Hampstead community of London, England until 1911, when they moved to Cavendish Square. She passed away November 25, 1940, and is buried in Littlehampton Cemetery, West Sussex, England.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of two copies (one partial) of typescripts of Charlotte Ellen Lea Bax's memoirs, with handwritten edits. Topics discussed include her early childhood, parents, religion, her courtship and marriage, her children, London society, and London's influenza epidemic of 1895.
