Scope and Content Note

The collection includes interviews, documentation, and research project materials created as part of the Arkansas Delta Oral History Project. These include transcripts, release forms, audiocassette tapes, compact discs, and mini digital video cassette tapes of interviews on different topics in the Arkansas Delta; student projects in the forms of papers, PowerPoints, skits, drawings, and poems; and student thank you cards to interviewees. Some examples of topics covered include integration in schools, music, natural disasters, soul food, and military service.

Special Collections may lack playback equipment for some collection materials (such as Mini DV tapes), and digitization may be required before users can view such materials.

Use Information

Use Restrictions Apply: Sharon Bryant and Rana McClain each imposed usage restrictions on their interviews, as detailed in the inventory. Researchers are responsible for consulting the release form for each interviewee, when available, and ensuring conditions are followed.

Biographical Note

The Arkansas Delta Oral History Project was a community outreach effort initiated by University of Arkansas professor David Jolliffe that involved collaboration between University of Arkansas students and Arkansas high school students in the Arkansas Delta region. University of Arkansas students partnered with high school students to conduct oral history interviews and related research and writing projects. The project resulted in a 2016 book, co-authored by Jolliffe, Christian Z. Goering, James A. Anderson, and Krista Jones Oldham, The Arkansas Delta Oral History Project: Culture, Place, and Authenticity.

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged in chronological order by year then alphabetically by project title.

Some release forms were donated without corresponding interview materials; these have been grouped together chronologically.

Each digital folder represents born-digital collection materials that were initially received on USB flashdrives and have been migrated to Special Collections digital storage.

Acquisition Information

The Arkansas Delta Oral History Project Records were donated to the Special Collections Department by David A. Jolliffe of Fayetteville, Arkansas, on March 29, 2019. Jolliffe initiated and coordinated the Arkansas Delta Oral History Project.

Processing Information

Processed by Elysa Barton and Katrina Windon; completed in May 2019.

Born-digital materials received on flash drives were migrated to Special Collections digital storage and access copies were normalized to standard file formats and renamed as part of processing.
