Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of a copy of a memoir written by George L. Harris about his experience as Executive Secretary for the binational Fulbright Foundation in China from 1947-1949, "An Experience in Administration under Stress in a Bi-National Organization in China," as well as a brief biographical note about Harris. The memoir was initially written by Harris in response to a call from Dr. Richard T. Arndt for an essay for The Fulbright Difference, 1942-1992, although Harris' contribution was not ultimately included.

Biographical Note

George L. Harris (1910-2011) served as Executive Secretary for the binational Fulbright Foundation in China, from 1947-1949. He later served as Public Affairs Officer for the U. S. State Department's Bureau of Far Eastern Affairs, and then on the faculty of the American University in Washington, D. C. from 1954-1981.

Acquisition Information

The George L. Harris Memoir was donated to the Special Collections Department by Anne Carpenter of Washington, D. C. on November 18, 1998. Carpenter is a former staff member for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES).
