Acquisition Information

The Fay Jones Undergraduate Projects were donated to the Special Collections Department by the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, on January 18, 2019. The materials were originally discovered in 2018 during an extensive restoration of the Jones House, Fayetteville, Ar.

Biographical Note

Euine Fay Jones was born January 31, 1921 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, became one of Arkansas' most celebrated architects. Jones achieved the highest honor awarded to American Architects, the AIA Gold Medal. Jones enrolled in the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1938. At that time, the only architecture classes offered were in the engineering department. For two and a half years, Jones studied civil engineering. His academic career was interrupted by World War II and a stint in the Navy. He returned to the University of Arkansas in 1946 to enroll in the new architecture program and graduated in 1950. Several of Jones's buildings in Arkansas are on the National Register of Historic Places including the Applegate House and Cooper Chapel in Benton County, Thorncrown Chapel, the Shaheen/Goodfellow Weekend House in Cleburne County, the Edmondson House in St. Francis County, and the Hantz House and Fay Jones House in Washington County. The School of Architecture + Design at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville bears his name. Jones served as a faculty member and as the first Dean of the School of Architecture. Fay Jones died at his home in Fayetteville on August 30, 2004.

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of Jones' student work, primarily of academic mechanical and architectural drawings completed by Jones as an undergraduate student before and after a stint in the Navy during World War II. Also included are a set of academic mechanical drawings completed by Mary Elizabeth(Gus) Jones, his wife.

The materials are divided into those that are dated and undated. The dated materials are further arranged chronologically by project type, mechanical and architectural in two oversided folders.
