Biographical Note
John P. Gaines (1795- 1857) served as a major in the First Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry during the Mexican-American War. Gaines was later a U.S. representative from Kentucky (1847-49) and governor of Oregon Territory (1850-55).
