Scope and Content Note

The records consist of daily cash journals and individual account journals, as well as miscellaneous business records. Daily cash journals record daily business transactions from 1916 to 1962 and embody volumes 1-7. Individual account journals record the expenses of W. S. McClintock and Sons, as well as the accounts of individual customers from 1908 to 1963. Most of these journals are in alphabetical order by customer and embody volumes 8-14. Volume 10 contains real estate records. Miscellaneous records consist of loose items found in the beginning of journals. These items include correspondence, cotton and soil allotment records, World War II farm defense program records, and real estate records. These records are in box 1.

Biographical Note

In 1892, P.E. Northern and Company opened a general merchandise store in Marianna (Lee County), Arkansas. One of the employees was W.S. McClintock. Soon after that, R.L. Mixon bought out P.E. Northern and the business became known as Mixon and McClintock. In 1923, W.S. McClintock bought out Mixon and a partnership was formed with his sons, Robert S., William E., and Oliver W. The business became McClintock and Sons Company which went out of business in 1962. Between 1892 and 1962, the P.E. Northern Company and the McClintock and Sons Company sold Oliver-Case farm implements, groceries, general merchandise, and household appliances. W.S. McClintock and Sons Company also sold real estate in Marianna and Lee County.
