Scope and Content Note

The papers contain twelve photograph albums which contain pictures taken of various places Kimpel visited between 1958 and 1970. Albums are arranged chronologically and the labels of each album were created by Kimpel. The papers also contain one plaque for distinguished teaching, which Kimpel received from the Blue Key Fraternity in 1961.

Biographical Note

Ben Kimpel (1915-1983) was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas. After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, he attended Harvard University where he received his bachelors degree in 1937 and his masters degree in 1939. In 1942, Kimpel received his doctorate in American literature from the University of North Carolina. Between 1942 and 1946, Kimpel served in the U. S. Army. Between 1946 and 1951, he served with the State Department in Austria. In 1952, Kimpel joined the faculty of the University of Arkansas, where he taught English, until his death in 1983. While at the University of Arkansas, Kimpel published several scholarly works with T.C. Duncan Eaves, including a biography of English author Samuel Richardson, and several articles on Ezra Pound.
