Scope and Content Note
Collection of 256 glossy prints, mostly 8" by 10", made from the photographer’s negatives for Special Collections in the winter of 1980-1981. Subjects include rural schools before and after the WPA construction program and before and after consolidation; farm tenancy and migratory farm labor, many small rural churches and dwellings, including log structures, tenant houses, and sharecroppers’ cabins; and agricultural structures, including many types of chicken houses, barns, and sheds for fruit and livestock enterprises.

Biographical Note
Dr. Charlton (1904-1996) was emeritus professor of rural sociology, having served on the University of Arkansas faculty from 1937-1972. In the course of his research on such subjects as rural schools, migratory farm labor, and land tenure, he realized the opportunity and need of documenting his findings with photographs.
