Biographical Note
The S.E. Tucker Plantation was established in 1871 by John Woodfin Tucker, (1845-1908), an Alabama native and Confederate Civil War veteran. The Tucker family has maintained ownership of the plantation since that time, being managed in turn by D. Everett Tucker and Everett Tucker, Jr., son and grandson of John Tucker. The plantation took its name from John's wife, Sarah E. Tucker, and the signature "S.E. Tucker" appears throughout the records regardless of who actually signed for the operation. Primarily a cotton producing operation, the Tucker plantation eventually grew to 2800 acres, worked by both paid farm workers and resident sharecroppers. The store and post office at Tucker were also managed by members of the Tucker family, the latter serving as a makeshift banking facility through money order sales to patrons unable to afford conventional banking accounts.
