Scope and Content Note

The material consists of correspondence and documents relating to Clark's careers and political interests in the area. A large portion concerns political appointments and Clark's ties to Senator Hattie W. Caraway and Congressman Ben Cravens. Also included are several newspaper clippings (primarily obituaries of Clark) and one broadside (folder 4) concerning the national elections of 1932.

Biographical Note

August Barnwell Clark was born August 31, 1877 near Nashville, Arkansas. He moved to Texarkana, Arkansas in 1920, and was elected to fill the unexpired term of mayor in 1931. Winning election to a full term in 1932, he served in that capacity until 1934.

In 1933 Clark was appointed assistant manager of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation, supervising the southwest region of Arkansas. He resigned from that position in 1935 to become secretary of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Texarkana, a position he held until his death in 1940.

  1. Series 1. Correspondence and documents accumulated during the mayoral career of August B. Clark. Several items of correspondence concern the congressional elections of 1932. (Box 1, Folders 1-9)f
  2. Series 2. Correspondence and documents accumulated during Clark's tenure as assistant manager of the Home Owners' Loan Corporation. (Box 2, Folders 1-6)
  3. Series 3. Correspondence and documents accumulated during Clark's career as secretary of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Texarkana. Also included are newspaper clippings (primarily obituaries of Clark) and records pertaining to Clark's involvement with the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce. (Box 2, Folders 7-12)
