This collection includes correspondence, brochures, reports, speeches, and chapter drafts related to the Fulbright program and scholarly exchange, primarily gathered by Elizabeth Lam Vieg for the completion of a book on the history of the Fulbright program. Other materials include various publications, mostly regarding Fulbright conferences held between 1953 and 1980.

Biographical Note

Dr. Elizabeth Lam Vieg (1906-1999) served as executive secretary of the CIES (then the Council for International Exchange of Persons) from 1950-1971.

The Council for International Exchange of Scholars was founded in 1947 and for over 70 years the CIES has administered the Fulbright Program on behalf of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA).

The Elizabeth Lam Vieg Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by Dr. Elizabeth Lam Vieg, formerly the executive secretary of the Committee on the International Exchange of Scholars (then the Committee on the International Exchange of Persons), on October 16, 1984.
