Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of 23 letters and three letter fragments from Smith to family members during and immediately after World War I, two letters from the War Department and the Treasury Department to Smith and his family regarding injuries he received in battle, a much later letter from Smith to a niece writing a genealogy of the Smiths, and a photograph of Smith shortly after his enlistment. Several letters have been published in The Ancestors and Descendants of Asa Andrew and Sceleta Caroline (Abernethy) Smith, vol. 1, compiled and edited by Gloria Lee (Miller) Counts (North Little Rock: Gloria Lee Miller Counts, 1984).

Biographical Note

Chester Dane Smith was born December 6, 1894, in Lanark, Arkansas. He enlisted April 7, 1917, in Warren, Arkansas. His company, Company I of the First Arkansas, was called into service as Company I, 153rd Infantry. Smith served overseas with Company M, 23rd Infantry, April 23, 1918 to August 4, 1919, taking part in the Battle of Chateau Thierry (June 6-14, 1918), the Saint Mihiel Offensive (September 12-16, 1918), the Champagne Offensive (October 2-9, 1918), and the Meuse Argonne Offensive (November 1-3, 1918). He was with the Army of Occupation in Germany January 6 to July 16, 1919. He was honorably discharged August 16, 1919, at Camp Pike, Arkansas. Smith died in Banks, Arkansas, October 24, 1965.

The Chester Dane Smith Papers were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1986 by Mary Helen Smith McCaskill (daughter of Chester Dane Smith) of Warren, Arkansas.
