Biographical Note
John Rawlings was born in Illinois on February 14, 1834 and was left at an orphanage at an early age until he went to live with his grandmother in Missouri at the age of two. Rawlings married Nancy J. Smith, and the couple had eight children together. In 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as lieutenant, but was soon promoted to captain, a role in which he served until discharged in January 1863. In 1866, he returned home to begin cultivating his land and eventually opened up a cotton business in Waldron, Arkansas.
