The James H. Means List of Notes was purchased by the Special Collections Department from South by Southwest Books (List #30, Item #70) of Fayetteville, Arkansas, circa summer 1986.

Biographical Note

James H. Means was the first county clerk of Calhoun County, Arkansas, serving from 1850-1860 and again from 1866-1874. He and his wife were founding members of Mount Pleasant Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Scope and Content Note

"List of notes &c deposited with me by J.J.J. Ferrell the 16th July A.D. 1861 when starting off a volunteer for the seat of war." Signed by James H. Means of Hampton, Arkansas, March 15, 1861. Names and amounts payable.
