Biographical Note

Cora Pinkley Call(1892-1966) was born in Winona Springs (Carroll County), the youngest of George Washington and Mary Jane Harp Pinkley's ten children. Due to a rare illness, Call was taken out of school at an early age and spent most of her time out of doors studying plant and animal life. In 1925 Call began contributing articles that primarily dealt with nature and gardening to national newspapers and magazines. She later began using three pen names; Karel Lowe, Sallie Green, and Marjorie Thorn, as well as her own. Call founded and was life president of the Ozark Writers and Artists Guild of Eureka Springs. In 1953, she and Edith Bestard began Ozark Gardens, a nationally distributed newspaper that was devoted to gardening and birds. Call was married to Miles Oliver Call and had five children; Peggy Joyce, George Patrick, Paul, Philip Dale, and Betty Jane.
