Scope and Content Note

The papers include sermon notes and religious essays pertaining to topics such as instrumental music in worship, cigarette smoking, and salvation. The papers also include bulletins from the Thompson Street and Robinson Avenue Churches of Christ (Springdale, Arkansas) and other Arkansas Churches of Christ, Church of Christ membership directories from Springdale and Johnson (Washington County), a photograph of Harbart Hooker, and a photograph of Glenn and Beulah Steward. Researchers should note that in 1976 Max Steward, Glenn Steward1s son, donated his father's library to the Johnson Church of Christ in Johnson, Arkansas. Photographs 3-21 are of sermon subjects and notes written on blackboards as illustrations during religious meetings.

Biographical Note

Glenn Steward (1897-1976) was a travelling minister and Sunday School teacher for the Church of Christ in northwest Arkansas. Steward began his career in 1937 after being ordained by the Thompson Street Church of Christ (Springdale, Arkansas). During the early 1940s he and fellow evangelist Harbart Hooker preached throughout Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Before his death, Glenn Steward also was minister for the Johnson Church of Christ in Johnson, (Washington County) Arkansas.

Most of the religious essays are undated and have been arranged alphabetically by title. Sermon notes have been arranged by year and place of sermon.

Paul Haynie of Fayetteville, Arkansas donated the Glenn Steward Papers to Special Collections on April 29, 1988.
