Biographical Note

The Center Street Church of Christ was founded in 1886 when a small band broke away from the First Christian Church of Fayetteville. Originally located on Cemetery Street (now known as Government Street), the church moved to its present location (Center and Locust Streets) in 1949. In 1945, the Church began a mission effort at Drake Town (Madison County). In 1953, the Center Street Church sponsored a camp meeting at the Sequoyah Assembly where the legendary negro preacher, R.N. Hogan, conducted services. The Center Street Church of Christ also helped establish the Combs Street Church of Christ in 1951 and the North Street Church of Christ in 1958.

Scope and Content Note

The records include an incomplete set of minutes (1897-1949), directories (1902-1968), Bible school records (1906-1942), and bulletins (1944-1986).

Boxes 4-5

Boxes 4-5 contain church bulletins which were distributed at Sunday services. The bulletins contain a record of sermon topics, as well as local church news, including periodic financial statements. However, the bulletins form a very incomplete set, and only 1955-1959, 1965-1967, and 1975 approach being a complete run.

The last folder in box 5 contains two promotional announcements for church activities. The final item in the series is an artifact: a metal half-tone photographic plate of Charles G. Caldwell, a minister of the church during the 1930s.
