Biographical Note
The McIlroy Bank of Fayetteville (Washington County) is one of the oldest banks in Arkansas. Its founder, William McIlroy, entered the banking business on January 2, 1871 when he became a partner in the D. D. Stark and Company Bank. He lost $40,000 by 1875 as a result of his partner's dishonesty and from then on McIlroy operated alone. William McIlroy, along with Lafayette Gregg, helped finance the construction of Arkansas Industrial University in 1871. Since that time the McIlroy family and McIlroy Bank have played an important role in the development of Fayetteville and Washington County.
