Biographical Note

Herbert Bradley Martin (December 11, 1888-August 5, 1918) was a 1911 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the first United States serviceman from Bradley County, Arkansas, who was killed in action during World War I. His parents were descendents of early Arkansas pioneer families. Herbert's father, Dr. Charles N. Martin (1854-1944) was the son of Dr. John Wilson Martin, a Virginia native who followed his brother to southeast Arkansas in 1845. Herbert's mother was Sarah Eunice Bradley (1862-1935) granddaughter of the founder of Bradley County, Hugh Bradley (1783-1854). Herbert was raised in Warren and attended the public schools. When he attended college at Fayetteville, he majored in chemistry and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Before the entry of the United States into the European war, Herbert lived in Dallas, Texas, where he worked for the Western Union office and courted a local girl, Maybelle Stiener. He enlisted in Company I, 30th Engineers, United States Army, in December, 1917, and sailed for France the following March. On August 5, 1918, while standing guard duty near the town of Chery-Chartreuve, Herbert Martin was killed by an artillery shell.

Aside from his parents, only Herbert's sisters survived him. Dorthea "Dot" Martin (1896-1981) never married and became principal of the Warren Primary School, retiring in 1962. Alma Martin married Arthur E. Haegler, a civil engineer originally from Alton, Illinois, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He may have served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War I and during World War II he worked for the Corps out of the Galveston, Texas, office. During this period he was active in flood control construction projects along the Arkansas River. Their daughter, Shirley Ann Heagler, was the mother of Jim and Mark Griggs, the donors of this collection.

Detailed Description of the Collection

The following contains a detailed list of the materials in the collection

series 1: Letters,

1859-1978

Box 1

Letters written by various members of the Bradley, Martin, and Heagler family, or written to them from friends, business associates, and distant relatives. Almost all of the nineteenth-century letters concern the Bradley family. Samuel H. Bradley, brother to Sara Eunice Bradley Martin, wrote to his mother and sisters from locations in Kentucky and Missouri while working for different railroad companies. Mary P. Green was a niece of James Bradley who wrote to him and her other Bradley cousins from Pennington, Texas. Letters from the turn of the century through the 1920s are mostly from the Herbert Bradley Martin family, including those written by him after his entry into the army and up to the week before his death in France. Maybelle Stiener, Herbert's girlfriend, also wrote to the family from her home in Dallas. The most recent letters in this series generally pertain to the Arthur Heagler family, including many letters of recommendation written in Arthur's behalf by former employers. Other contemporary letters concern Dorthea "Dot" Martin, who lived with her sister, Alma Martin Heagler, after her husband Arthur's death in 1973.

series 2: Diaries and memoranda books,

1862-1945

Boxes 1-2

Diaries and memoranda books kept by James Bradley, Samuel H. Bradley, Sara Eunice Bradley Martin, and Arthur Heagler. The first five memoranda books, placed in folders 15 and 16, were probably kept by James Bradley. In addition to the daily weather and farming activity entries there are expense notations and other financial records. The diary of Samuel H. Bradley covers only a few weeks in the spring of 1883 and is also primarily a weather journal with additional ledger-type notations. The diaries of Sarah Eunice Bradley Martin are more in the style of conventional diaries with daily activity entries. The last diary, kept by Arthur Heagler, is a small memorandum book of appointments and expenses during the spring of 1945.
