Herbert Bradley Martin (December 11, 1888-August 5, 1918) was a 1911 graduate of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and the first United States serviceman from Bradley County, Arkansas, who was killed in action during World War I. His parents were descendents of early Arkansas pioneer families. Herbert's father, Dr. Charles N. Martin (1854-1944) was the son of Dr. John Wilson Martin, a Virginia native who followed his brother to southeast Arkansas in 1845. Herbert's mother was Sarah Eunice Bradley (1862-1935) granddaughter of the founder of Bradley County, Hugh Bradley (1783-1854). Herbert was raised in Warren and attended the public schools. When he attended college at Fayetteville, he majored in chemistry and a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Before the entry of the United States into the European war, Herbert lived in Dallas, Texas, where he worked for the Western Union office and courted a local girl, Maybelle Stiener. He enlisted in Company I, 30th Engineers, United States Army, in December, 1917, and sailed for France the following March. On August 5, 1918, while standing guard duty near the town of Chery-Chartreuve, Herbert Martin was killed by an artillery shell.

Aside from his parents, only Herbert's sisters survived him. Dorthea "Dot" Martin (1896-1981) never married and became principal of the Warren Primary School, retiring in 1962. Alma Martin married Arthur E. Haegler, a civil engineer originally from Alton, Illinois, and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. He may have served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War I and during World War II he worked for the Corps out of the Galveston, Texas, office. During this period he was active in flood control construction projects along the Arkansas River. Their daughter, Shirley Ann Heagler, was the mother of Jim and Mark Griggs, the donors of this collection.
