Biographical Note

James Freeman Clarke (b. April 4, 1810 - d. June, 1888) was a Unitarian clergyman in Boston. Active in behald of temperance, the abolition of slavery, and woman suffrage, he was a transcendentalist and an intimate of Ralph Waldo Emerson. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Board of Education (1863-69), a Trustee of the Boston Public Library (1879-88), lecturer on ethnic religions and non-resident professor in the Harvard Divinity School (1867-71, 1887-77), and a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College (1863-72, 1873-85, 1886-88). A prolific writer, he was the author of nine books and of innumerable sermons, newspaper articles and reviews.
