Scope and Content Note
Photocopies of, for the most part, correspondence created or received by Edward Cross. Series I consists principally of incoming correspondence, 1838-1843, from Cross' relatives, friends, constituents, and political supporters during and immediately prior to his three terms in Congress, including election campaigns, patronage, and legislation relating to mail routes, petitions for redress of grievances, agriculture, land surveys, military affairs, banking and the monetary system, human trafficking as part of the Atlantic slave trade, and Native American affairs; included, however, are a few outgoing letters, from the same period, which pertain entirely to personal and familial affairs. Series II consists of unpublished essays written, 1856-1857, by Cross' daughter, Nannie E. Cross.

Biographical Note
Edward Cross was a Tennessee-born lawyer, jurist, surveyor, legislator and railroad developer who moved to Arkansas in 1826, where he practiced law in the town of Washington in partnership with David Ringo until 1832. He served as U. S. Superior Court judge for Arkansas Territory (1832-1836), U. S. Surveyor General for Public Lands in Arkansas (1836-1838), U. S. Representative from Arkansas (1839-1845), Arkansas State Supreme Court justice (1845-1855), president of the Cairo and Fulton Railway (1855-1862), and Arkansas State Attorney General in 1874.

Arrangement of the Papers
Collection consists of two series: correspondence and essays by Cross' daughter, Nannie E. Cross. Both of these series are arranged chronologically.
Acquisition Information
The Edward Cross Political and Familial Papers were purchased by Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1979 from John E. Conner Museum, Texas A & M University of Kingsville, Texas where the originals are preserved.
