Scope and Content Note

Correspondence and other records created or received by John Samuel Faubus.

Records consist principally of correspondence, exchanged 1942-1966 with political leaders and with political sympathetic "Free-thinkers" and "Liberals," in expression of political opinions. Included are copies of Faubus' letters, many pseudonymous, addressed to editors of newspapers and intended for publication.

Other records, pertaining to Orval E. Faubus, include war-time (1944-1945) souvenirs, letters (1944 1946) from and poems (c 1959-1965) by him. Correspondents include Clyde Taylor Ellis, James William Fulbright, Wilton Robert Stephens, and James William Trimble.

Biographical Note

John Samuel "Little Sam" Faubus (1887-1966), was a native-born Madison County, Ark, farmer and sometime miner, migrant farm worker, lumberjack, door-to-door salesman, wartime defense plant worker, and Justice of the Peace who was a life-long observer and commentator on the national, state, and local political scene, a member of the Socialist Party (1913-1933), and the father of Orval Eugene Faubus, six-term (1955-1967) Governor of Arkansas.

Acquisition Information

The John Samuel Faubus Correspondence and Miscellaneous Records were separated from MC 301, the Orval Eugene Faubus Papers, in November 1980. MC 301 was gifted to Special Collections by the University of Arkansas Foundation, Inc. in September, 1978.
