Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of two letters by Arkansas politician Augustus Garland Hill: a letter dated July 30, 1886 from United States Attorney General Garland to Samuel Jackson Randall, regarding a Congressional appropriation for "Law clerks of the Supreme Judges...," and a letter dated July 15, 1879 from Senator Garland to someone named Christie[?] that mentions the high temperatures and the yellow fever concerns in Memphis.

Biographical Note
Augustus Hill Garland (1832-1899) was Governor of Arkansas, 1874-1877. Elected to the U.S. Senate, he served from 1877 until 1885, when he resigned to serve as Grover Cleveland's Attorney General, a position he held until 1889.

Letters are arranged in order of acquisition by Special Collections. Collection is boxed with other smaller collections.
Acquisition Information
The 1886 letter in folder 1 was purchased from the Carnegie Book Shop (New York, NY) by the Special Collections Department in October 1972.
The 1879 letter in folder 2 was purchased from the Argosy Book Store (New York, NY) by the Special Collections Department in March 2018.
Processing Information
First letter (Folder 1) processed by Samuel Sizer in October 1972; second letter (Folder 2) incorporated into collection by Katrina Windon in April 2018.
