    subseries 2: Personal Correspondence,

    1947-1981

Contains 27 folders of correspondence arranged chronologically. The correspondence most notably concerns Gwaltney's literary career and his friendship with Norman Mailer. Some correspondence relates to Gwaltney's teaching positions at Louisiana Polytechnic University in Ruston and Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, including letters from former students; to his participation in writer's workshops and conferences; and to his work on a documentary film entitled John Gould Fletcher, America's Lost Poet for the Arkansas Educational Television Network, 1976. Other concerns include financial and real estate matters; Charleston, Ark. reunions; and politics in Louisiana and Arkansas.

The Gwaltney-Mailer correspondence comprises 176 letters, postcards, or telegrams written primarily from 1947 to 1966, but also including letters written in 1974, 1976 and 1979.

The correspondence from 1947 to 1960 concerns, for the most part, Gwaltney's development as a novelist and his associa-tion with agents, editors and publishers. Several of Mailer's letters during this period contain critiques of Gwaltney's early novels and short stories. Mailer's critiques not only illuminate aspects of Gwaltney's work, they also reflect Mailer's views on the novel form and the process of writing fiction. Mailer's novels, and other literary works, are mentioned in the correspondence though not discussed in great detail.

In addition, the correspondence contains views on con-temporary fiction, the motion picture industry, and politics. Personal matters such as Mailer's trips to Europe, Mexico, and Arkansas, and Gwaltney's trips to New York and New England are also discussed along with news of health, family activities and domestic arrangements, especially in the correspondence from the late 1960's to 1979.

Due to the fragile condition of many letters, only photocopies are available for research use. Photocopies of the letters are integrated, chronologically, with the personal correspondence making up sub-series 2 of series 1. A second, separate, file of photocopies is maintained for the convenience of researchers who only need access to the Mailer correspondence.
