Biographical Note

Benjamin McCulloch was born in 1811 in Rutherford County, Tennessee. In 1835, McCulloch traveled with his brother and David Crockett to Texas where he joined the Texas army in its fight for independence from Mexico. McCulloch continued his military career through the Mexican-American War. After the end of the war in 1848, McCulloch spent the next thirteen years traveling the West serving as a lawman. With the secession of Texas, McCulloch was called back to the South where he was appointed a brigadier general and made Little Rock his base of operations. McCulloch died at the Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas on March 7, 1862.
