Scope and Content Note
Collection consists of 22 autograph letters signed from John May to his wife Caroline who lived in Clarksville, Arkansas and later Scotia, Arkansas. Written during the overland expedition of the Clarksville and California Mining Association to California April-October 1849 and during his stay in California October 1849-January 1851. The letters depict the daily life of a man "gone to seek his fortune." Other miscellaneous letters and John May's commission papers in Floyd's Company of Volunteer Infantry, 10th Regiment, Johnson County Militia are included in the collection.

Biographical Note
John May was a member of the Clarksville and California Mining Association who traveled to California as part of the gold rush. He later returned to Arkansas and served in the Civil War.

Acquisition Information
The John May Correspondence was donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1983 by Boyd and Christine Murphy, in memory of Alice Latta Smith.
