Scope and Content Note

Dardanelle resident Mary Hannah (Mollie) Johnston Morrow's diary, school essays and related material. The diary is written in several sections; beginning on sheets of loose paper, continued in the back of a bound sales journal, and completed on sheets of loose paper, it comprehends the period June 1, 1864 to November 3, 1866. The bound volume contains, in addition to the diary entries, a record of daily sales, from March 5, 1864 to April 10, 1864, for an unidentified general mercantile business.

Series 2 comprises school essays, 1862 ... 1869, one letter, 1867, and a posthumous "Tribute of Respect," 1876.

Material pertains to personal, familial and community concerns such as daily tasks and activities of the family members (See Biographical Note); lists of dinner and overnight guests, local weather conditions, births, deaths, illnesses, marriages, parties, church sermons, news and rumors circulating about the Civil War, and other concerns of the Dardanelle community and of the Johnston family in particular.
