Guest register of Southern Hotel, "I. A. Newman, proprietor," formerly "Baird House, J. Baird, Proprietor" for the period August 6, 1882-October 2, 1883. Entries indicate that guests included Thomas Boles (Sept. 17, 1883), Prince William of Wurtemberg (Jan. 2, 1883), North Carolina Governor Frank Overton (Nov. 4, 1882), the entire casts of traveling dramatic companies (Aug. 19 and Nov. 16, 1882), and Ulysses Simpson Grant (Dec. 23, 1882).
