Biographical Note

James R. Toney was born in Smith County, Tennessee in 1817 to Elijah and Mary (Rucks) Toney. He was a merchant and farmer who moved to Arkansas in 1846. He moved to Camden, Arkansas in 1855 operating a farm and occassionally a mercantile business until his retirement in 1888.
