Leah Jones Hurt Scrapbook

Scrapbook, ca 1903-1915

Manuscript Collection 1413

Leah Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave Jones, a prominent Newport lawyer and a holder of a  master's degree from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1912 and taught English and history in Newport High School, Newport, Arkansas.  She was married to Garland Hurt, a native of Newport, on Sep 4, 1920. Leah Jones Hurt died on Sep 19, 1989.

The scrapbook, at the time it was donated to the University of Arkansas Libraries, contained letters, picture postcards, photographs, newspaper clippings, miscellaneous printed material, and memorabilia which Leah Jones collected while at the University of Arkansas, as well as items dated before and after her sojourn at the University, e.g., a letter from her paternal grandfather (Dec 3, 1903), a letter from her mother (1934), letters to her husband (1950), and others.  The condition of the scrapbook is very poor and most of the items were laid in between the pages.  These loose items were removed from the scrapbook and arranged in separate folders.

The Leah Jones Hurt Scrapbook was donated to the University of Arkansas Libraries by Jo Anne Holyfield, Camden, Arkansas, on December 1, 1999.
Processed by Vera Ekechukwu, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, in August 2000.
