The papers consist of ledgers, legal documents, letters, and miscellaneous papers which pertain to the Johnson lands and the Wilson's farming operation. Divided into two series, the papers have been arranged in chronological order.

Biographical / Historical

William "Major" Johnson was an early settler of Hempstead County, Arkansas, settling on land that his grandfather, Edward Johnson, claimed in 1818. Major (as he was always called) married Sallie Hawkins in 1852 and in the following year the couple began building a large house on the original Johnson acreage. The large home was called "Woodlawn," and Major's descendants lived there until 1973. The home has been moved to Old Washington Historic State Park. Major Johnson's youngest daughter, Aloyise, married David Wilson in 1899. The Wilson family farmed the Johnson holdings throughout the twentieth century.
