Scope and Content Note

The collection includes eighty-two audiocassette tapes containing interviews conducted by Randall Woods with J. William Fulbright, Dale Bumpers, McGeorge Bundy, Orval Faubus, Allan Gilbert, Hoyt Purvis, Arthur Schlesinger, Dean Rusk, Lee Williams, and others as part of research for Woods' biography on Fulbright. The locations of the interviews include Fayetteville, AR; Washington, D.C.; and Bonn, Germany.

Biographical Note

Randall Bennett Woods (1944 - ) received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas in 1972. In 1985 he was named John A. Cooper Professor of American History and in 1996 was promoted to Distinguished Professor. Woods has served as Associate Dean, Interim Dean, and Dean of Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. The interviews in this collection were collected by Woods for his award -winning Fulbright: A Biography (Cambridge, 1995), which was nominated for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and which won the Ferrell and Ledbetter Prizes. In 2006, the Free Press published LBJ: Architect of American Ambition. Woods was selected to be both Mary Ball Washington Distinguished Professor at University College, Dublin and the Fulbright 50th Anniversary Chair at the University of Bonn.

Arrangement of the Papers

Tapes have been retained in Woods' original order, with original tape numbers; they are arranged alphabetically by interviewee except for tapes #81 and 82.

Acquisition Information

The Randall B. Woods Interview Tapes were donated to the Special Collections Department by Randall B. Woods in October 1999.
