Biographical Note

Charles Boewe was born March 11, 1924, in West Salem, Illinois. He married Mary Scurrah in 1950; the couple had two daughters. Boewe earned his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in American Studies in 1955 and later became the director of the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan for the Fulbright Foundation in 1964-1967 and 1973-1980. Between these times, he served as the director for the United States Commission for Cultural Exchange from 1967-1970, the director for American Studies Research Centre in Hyderabad, India from 1970-1971, and the director for the United States Educational Foundation in India from 1971-1973. Boewe published several works, including: The Green Book: American Scholars in Pakistan (1977); The Town on the Square: Portrait of a Vanished World (2008); and The Life of C.S. Rafineque: A Man of Uncommon Zeal (2011). On March 15, 2014, Boewe was awarded the Stafleu Medal for his works on Constantine Samuel Rafinesque. Boewe passed away January 1, 2016.

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged by topic. Digital files were originally stored on one USB drive and two CDs, and have now been migrated to a server.

Acquisition Information

The Charles Boewe Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by Boewe's daughter, Abby Burnett, of Kingston, Arkansas, on June 16, 2016.

Additional materials were donated by Abby Burnett on November 27, 2017, and have been added to the collection as Box 1, Folders 30-31.

Additional materials were donated by Abby Burnett on March 16, 2018, and have been added to the collection as Box 1, Folders 32-33. One item (Oversize Folder 1) was donated by Charles Boewe to Special Collections on June 26, 2005.
