Description Ernest Cecil "Ernie" Deane (1911-1991) was an Arkansas native, journalist, soldier, teacher, folklorist and historian. He is best known as the writer of the original Arkansas Traveler (1956-1965) newspaper column in the Arkansas Gazette for which most of the negatives in this collection were made.

Description The general photograph file consists of a general collection of images of Arkansas and its people. The majority of the collection consists of black and white prints on paper and safety negatives. Some color visuals are also available. There are limited numbers of rarer photographic images such as daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes, and cyanotypes. Also included are non-photographic images such as line drawings, postcards, engravings, and portraits.

Description Obsitnik became a photographer with the Arkansas Gazette after World War II and worked for the paper for more than 35 years. NOTE: most of these photos were made while Obsitnik was employed by the Arkansas Gazette newspaper.

Northwest Arkansas Times Collection

Description An all-encompassing collection of images made during the latter half of the 20th century by the "Northwest Arkansas Times." Coverage area is mainly Fayetteville (Washington County), although other areas in Washington County and Northwest Arkansas are depicted. The collection was generously donated by the "Northwest Arkansas Times."

Persistence of the Spirit

Description Persistence of the Spirit consists of black and white copy negatives of visuals loaned for the Persistence of the Spirit project. Persistence of the Spirit, directed by Ken Hubbell, was an interpretive study of the people and events that contributed to the black experience in Arkansas. It was developed in 1986-87 by a team of humanities scholars (including Patricia Washington McGraw, Carl H. Moneyhon, Ruth Polk Patterson, Grif Stockley, Orville W. Taylor, LeRoy T. Williams, and Nudie E. Williams with Tom Baskett Jr. as editor). Supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Public Projects and the Arkansas Humanities Council, the project included a permanent exhibit at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, traveling exhibits, booklets, classroom guides, and a 30-minute video documentary.

Ray Rains Collection (Collection P29)

Description The Ray Rains Collection consists of 5,071 photographs made or collected by Ray Rains of Pangburn, White County, Arkansas. Rains, b. 1919, opened a photography studio in 1976, doing portraits and copying and collecting old photographs. Subjects range from disaster scenes to political campaigns. The collection is particularly strong in images from North Central Arkansas, especially White, Cleburne, Jackson, and Woodruff counties.
