About the Special Collections Department

visiting scholar and class

Mission Statement: Special Collections supports the research, teaching, and learning mission of the University of Arkansas by collecting, preserving, and providing access to unique and rare materials.

Vision Statement: The Special Collections Department strives to be a welcoming destination for our faculty, students, and the public. We facilitate research and are active partners in developing new knowledge by fostering scholarship, experiential learning opportunities for students, and engaging programming for our community. Our spaces provide opportunities for inter-disciplinary collaborations, which draw on the expertise of faculty and staff that they bring to this work through their deep knowledge of archival practice.

About the department: Special Collections was created in 1967 to encourage research and writing in the history and culture of Arkansas and the surrounding region. Since then, our collections have grown to include architectural records, the personal papers of artists and musicians, historical records documenting the creation of the Fulbright program and international exchanges, as well as the University Archives, rare book collections, and much more. Learn more about the collections.
